One Indiana city found itself being named one of the most burglarized places in the country, according to a new study, and it might not be the first one that would come to mind.

When you think of Indiana overall, you don’t really associate it with crime. Sure, criminal acts happen all of the time, but that’s not typically the stereotype that goes with Indiana. I mean, Indiana isn’t even one of the top ten most dangerous states in the country. One of those crimes that is often committed throughout Indiana is burglary. We all know the importance of locking up your home and your vehicle. No matter how safe you feel your neighborhood is, there’s always someone out there looking to break in and steal your valuables.

SafeWise, a website that says its mission is to empower people everywhere to build safe communities, ranked cities across the United States for burglary rates per capita. They found the most burglarized city in each state. Thankfully, Indiana’s most burglarized city wasn’t near the top of that list. Here are the top five cities with the most burglaries per capita:

  1. Vernon, California
  2. Sauget, Illinois
  3. McIntosh, Alabama
  4. Lumberton, North Carolina
  5. Sabula, Iowa

Now, when it comes to the most burglarized city in Indiana, it might come as a shock to you. It’s not Indianapolis, Gary, Evansville, or Fort Wayne. In fact, the city with the most burglaries per capita is none other than Terre Haute.
