Indiana’s revised Move Over Law aims to save lives

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Indiana State Police are urging drivers to move over and slow down for vehicles with flashing lights on the highway shoulders. Saturday, October 18, marks National Move Over Day, emphasizing the importance of these laws.

“Indiana’s Move Over Law has been in place since 1999,” said Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony Scott. He noted ongoing incidents where troopers and others are struck due to inattentive driving or driving under the influence.

The law, revised in 2023, requires drivers to move over for stationary vehicles with flashing lights, including emergency services, construction crews, and disabled vehicles. If moving over isn’t safe, drivers should slow down to 10 mph below the speed limit. Violators face a class B infraction…
