INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indy Hunger Network is among food assistance providers across Indiana that are bracing for a surge in need as the monthlong federal government shutdown has left the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program flailing.

A few days ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture posted a notice on its website that monthly federal food aid, also known by the acronym SNAP, will not go out Nov. 1, raising the stakes for families nationwide as the monthlong U.S. government shutdown continues. The Trump administration said it would not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep SNAP benefits flowing into November.

About 600,000 Hoosiers, or about 9% of the state’s population, are set to lose their SNAP benefits due to a federal government shutdown, according to the United Way of Central Indiana…
