Training board sets timeline for Indiana Sheriff’s decertification hearing

PLAINFIELD, Ind. — An Indiana sheriff had his first in-person meeting Monday with the body that is considering revoking his law enforcement certification.

Dubois County Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter has been under investigation by various state agencies since early 2024. A State Board of Accounts (SBOA) audit in July 2024 found he misspent $16,774 from his jail commissary from 2019 to 2023. He bought airfare and conference registration for his wife, Angie, using county money. He also bought several 22″ Blackstone flattop grills and $100 Visa gift cards for his deputies and jailers in 2023 using the commissary.

Kleinhelter repaid all funds flagged by the SBOA with a personal check weeks before the audit was released. He is not facing criminal charges…
