Carmel City Council passes ordinance restricting use of electric bikes

CARMEL, Ind. — The Carmel City Council passed an ordinance that will restrict the use of electric bikes on the City’s streets, sidewalks, trails and greenways on Monday night.

During a scheduled meeting, the council passed Ordinance D-2796-25-A. That ordinance will change some of the City’s rules on the use of certain “micromobility devices” like e-bikes and electric scooters.

The ordinance defines a micromibility device as “any open-air device designed for personal transportation, propelled wholly or in part by a mechanical or electrical motor, regardless of whether it also incorporates human power, and typically operating at lower speeds than traditional motor vehicles like cars or motorcycles, and not exceeding three feet in width.”…
