INDIANA — The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories across much of Indiana, warning residents of heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions beginning Saturday morning.
Counties and Cities Affected:
- Northern Indiana: Elkhart, LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Starke, Pulaski, Marshall, Fulton, Whitley, Allen, White, Cass, Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Wells, Adams, Grant, Blackford, and Jay. Cities include Fort Wayne, Auburn, Warsaw, Huntington, and Peru.
- Central Indiana: Carroll, Warren, Tippecanoe, Clinton, Howard, Montgomery, Boone, Hamilton, Madison, Delaware, Hendricks, Marion, Parke, Putnam, Fayette, Union, Franklin, Shelby, Logan, Owen, Johnson, Rush, Sullivan, Greene, Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, Decatur, and Knox. Cities include Indianapolis, Carmel, West Lafayette, Lafayette, Muncie, Columbus, Bloomington, Shelbyville, and Richmond.
Snowfall and Wind:
- Northern Indiana: Heavy snow with 8 to 14 inches expected north of U.S. Route 24, and 4 to 9 inches south of Route 24. Winds could gust 25 to 35 mph, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility.
- Central Indiana: Snowfall of 4 to 7 inches, with lighter amounts of 1 to 4 inches in southern counties. Winds may reach 35 mph in some areas.
Travel Impacts:
- The combination of heavy snow and gusty winds could make travel very difficult to impossible in northern Indiana.
- Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and hazardous statewide, especially in areas with higher snow accumulations.
