Indy man charged with stealing thousands of pounds of AT&T copper wire from utility poles

INDIANAPOLIS — An accused thief is facing five felony charges after police claim he spent the entire year repeatedly stealing and selling copper wire from utility poles around Indy’s near east side.

According to court records filed in Marion County, Joshua Westervelt started small. Dating back to January, the accused thief sold just a few pounds of stolen wire for anywhere from $2 to $20, but those numbers quickly escalated into the thousands.

In all, the suspect allegedly pawned stolen copper at least 103 times this year.
