New bill would change Indiana lieutenant governor selection process

INDIANAPOLIS — A new bill filed in the Indiana House of Representatives would change the selection process for the state’s lieutenant governor, differentiating from the process that helped Micah Beckwith, the state’s current lieutenant governor, obtain the position.

House Bill 1022, a bill centered on the selection of a candidate for lieutenant governor, was authored by Indiana State Rep. Danny Lopez, a Republican from Carmel. The bill was first read on Monday and was referred to the Committee on Elections and Apportionment.

The bill, if passed in its current form, would require a gubernatorial candidate to certify the name of a lieutenant governor candidate to run “jointly with” the candidate for governor. The bill, which would amend Indiana’s code surrounding elections, would be effective starting July 1, 2026.
