Frostbitten toddler found wondering outside in diaper during extreme cold

GREENFIELD, Ind. — A Greenfield woman was sitting inside her apartment on Monday afternoon when she heard a small child crying loudly outside. Stepping out into the bitter cold, she spotted a 2-year-old standing in the snow in only a diaper — the child’s skin beet red.

Court documents reveal that Greenfield police officers were called out to Praire Meadows Apartments on Indian Grass Lane shortly after 3 p.m. The temperature was 13 degrees when the woman found the child practically naked in the frigid elements. An officer wrapped the child in his coat and placed the toddler in his patrol vehicle.

Medics checked out the small child and determined the 2-year-old had severe hypothermia with frostbite afflicting their fingers and toes.

Police searching the area quickly found small footprints in the snow leading to another apartment, estimated to be 750 feet away from where the child was discovered. The door to this apartment was slightly ajar and an officer searching the home discovered the child’s father sleeping on a couch…
