INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — At least 16 people were killed in a terror attack on Sunday targeting the Jewish community celebrating the first night of Hannukah at Sydney, Australia’s famed Bondi Beach.
More than 9,300 miles away, the Indianapolis Jewish community is reeling from that tragedy as its members are celebrating at the Jewish Community Center. On Monday evening, members lit another candle on the second night of Hanukkah.
Rabbi Mentel Schusterman of the Indiana Jewish Discovery Center told News 8, “All Jews are one community when something happens to somebody, even in Australia, it’s our family and therefore it’s devastating for us. Often when such a terrible thing happens, they say we have to hide and cower. But as Jews, we say on the contrary, we have to be stronger, especially on the holiday of Hanukkah. We have to add more light in response in a responsible manner, and at the same time, we have to be strong and add more light than death.”…
