Illinois earthquake shakes three states, including Indiana

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A small earthquake in central Illinois early Tuesday morning reached portions of the Wabash Valley, according to the U.S. Geology Survey (USGS).

The USGS said the 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 1:27 a.m. Central Time, about 3 miles northeast of Ohman, Illinois.

According to WTWO’s sister station WJBK in St. Louis, USGS data show the earthquake occurred very close to the surface, which can make even small quakes more noticeable.

The quake stretched across three states, with people in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana reporting that they felt Tuesday’s earthquake.

According to the USGS’s interactive map, people in Terre Haute and Vincennes may have felt “weak” shaking caused by the earthquake.
