Multiple schools in Indiana announce closures for Tuesday

INDIANA — As winter storm conditions continue to affect much of Indiana, with heavy snow, extreme cold and hazardous road conditions following the weekend storm, many school districts across the state have announced closures, remote learning days and adjusted schedules for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. The statewide response reflects ongoing concerns for student safety amid extreme weather and slick travel conditions.

Southern and South-Central Indiana

A number of districts in south-central Indiana have confirmed closures or e-learning plans for Tuesday as roads remain snow-covered and dangerous:

Closed (Traditional Snow Day):

  • Bartholomew Consolidated Schools — Snow day, to be made up later in the year
  • Franklin Community Schools — Snow day
  • Decatur County Community Schools — Snow day; makeup planned(All are not offering in-person instruction Tuesday.)

E-Learning or Remote Instruction:

  • Flat Rock-Hawcreek Schools — E-Learning
  • Seymour Community Schools — E-Learning
  • Edinburgh Community Schools — E-Learning
  • Center Grove Community Schools — E-Learning Day
  • Brownstown Central Schools — E-Learning
  • Clark-Pleasant Community Schools — E-Learning
  • Greensburg Community Schools — E-Learning
  • Shelbyville Central Schools — E-Learning
  • Nineveh Hensley Jackson-Indiana Creek Schools — E-Learning(Many local districts are using remote activities rather than traditional closures where feasible.)

In addition to K-12 adjustments, Ivy Tech Columbus and IU Columbus campuses are operating virtually Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Western and Northwest Indiana

Several districts farther north have also reported closures or remote learning plans for Tuesday because of lingering winter conditions, especially in areas affected by snow and cold. While some schools have not issued specific details yet for Tuesday, winter weather reports indicate widespread travel hazards and continued low temperatures across the region. Conditions in northwest portions of the state and around the Chicago metro area have caused similar school impacts in recent days.

Other District Updates

Not all Indiana systems are closed; some areas are returning to normal operations as conditions improve. For example, Carroll County Schools announced they will return to normal schedules on Tuesday, while still warning about very cold temperatures.

Weather and Safety Context

Indiana has experienced significant snowfall and extreme cold tied to the January 2026 North American winter storm, which led state officials to issue a state of emergency and prompt widespread travel warnings. Forecasts include continued cold and icy conditions into Tuesday, influencing district decisions to delay or cancel in-person instruction.

Residents are encouraged to check local district communications for the most current updates, as conditions and decisions may continue to evolve throughout the day…
