IFD: Man tried to unthaw gas pipes with blowtorch, started house fire

INDIANAPOLIS — Three people and a dog were displaced after a house fire broke out on Indianapolis’ south side.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the fire began after someone attempted to thaw active gas lines under the house with a blowtorch.

Around 5:39 p.m., firefighters were called to a house in the 8300 block of Hill Gail Drive to find heavy smoke showing and they made an aggressive effort to get the fire under control, doing so in about 25 minutes.

The owner of the house told IFD that a family member was working inside a crawl space in the back of the house when he noticed a fire in the bedroom closet…
