Former officer injured in line of duty at odds with health benefits

City of Indianapolis says it’s committed on working on the issue

INDIANAPOLIS — A former IMPD officer, Santos Cortez, lives every day with the impacts from a drunk driver and is looking for the best medical solutions that will keep him alive for his wife and kids.

Cortez’s recent frustration with the city’s Workers’ Compensation claim process does not reflect his deep desire to continue to serve the city for which he wore a police badge.

“If they called me right now—help us, I would drop everything and do it because that’s how much I want to be the police,” Cortez said.
