Call Rafael: $500 gift card drained to $2.97 before the first swipe

INDIANAPOLIS — Wendy Williams wanted to stay on budget, so she put $500 on a gift card to keep from overspending on her trip.

On Oct. 18, Williams went to her neighborhood Kroger store on Madison and Edgewood on the south side of Indianapolis.

The store, like many retailers, offers an array of gift card choices. These cards are overseen by a separate vendor known as Blackhawk Network. After she activated the card, the money was drained immediately by unauthorized purchases on Apple and Amazon…
