New IMPD chief addresses traffic stop video backlash, calls for accountability

INDIANAPOLIS — On Wednesday evening on the east side of Indianapolis, there was applause from fellow IMPD leadership and community members as the City-County Council Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee voted to approve Tanya Terry as the next police chief.

That vote comes in the aftermath of a controversial video captured last week of an IMPD officer telling a juvenile driver during a traffic stop, “I will f******* kill you, Do you understand me?”

“Let me be clear, the words used in that incident were unacceptable,” Terry said. “That language does not reflect the values of this department or the professionalism we expect from our officers.”…
