If You’re From Indiana, These 10 Classic Dishes Hit Home

It’s hard to pin down Indiana’s exact contributions to the food scene, since so many popular dishes and restaurants have stemmed from our humble state. Yet, there are definitely certain dishes most Hoosiers favor that are hard to find anywhere else. If you grew up in Indiana, here are 10 dishes you definitely love.

1. Beef or Chicken and Noodles

What could possibly be more comforting than a plate of egg noodles and tender chunks of meat? In Indiana, we’re all about comfort food, and this classic dish is one we grew up loving. While some people are partial to this dish with chicken over beef (or vice versa), this quintessential meal is 100% Hoosier.

2. Breaded Pork Tenderloin

Okay, this is clearly the most Hoosier dish of them all. This beloved sandwich consists of a thinly pounded layer of pork, breaded, and fried. It’s not a true tenderloin if it’s not at least double the size of the bun and hand-battered.

3. Chili

Indiana doesn’t have a unique take on chili, but it is still slightly different from chili out of state. While regional versions vary (we’re talking about you, chili mac!), in general, chili in Indy is fairly mild and generally thicker and meatier than most other places. No matter how you love your chili, it’s pretty much a staple that you love it here in Indiana (and maybe pour it over nachos, hot dogs, or cheese fries).

4. Sugar Cream Pie

This beloved Indiana classic pie is simple, yet decadent. No self-respecting Hoosier would ever turn up their nose at this delicious dessert that frequently is the centerpiece of holiday parties. Whether homemade or from a bakery, this sugary, sweet pie is the pride and joy of Indiana.

5. Sweet Corn

We’re spoiled by farm-fresh foods here in Indiana, and our sweet corn is some of the best in the entire country. You might think of it as just a side dish, but here in Indiana, it’s the star of any meal. Why wouldn’t it be?

6. Country Fried Steak

Country fried steak is definitely not limited to Indiana, but it’s a dish we Hoosiers love. Whether you prefer it for breakfast or with a heaping portion of mashed potatoes for dinner, there’s always a restaurant nearby serving up this classic dish. You’ll find some of the best chicken fried steak in the state at Charlie Brown’s Pancake and Steak House.

7. Fried Chicken

It’s pretty much a guarantee that if it’s breaded and fried, we’ll love it here in Indiana. We’re crazy about fried chicken, but not just any fried chicken will do. We’re looking for freshly battered, perfectly crisp chicken that’s homemade and perfectly seasoned, every time.

8. Ribs

Okay, this one could just say BBQ anything, because we absolutely love BBQ here in the Hoosier State. Still, there’s something special about ribs that are perfectly smoked and doused in homemade BBQ sauce. To taste some of our best, try the ribs at Ziffle Rib Bar in Fort Wayne.

9. Biscuits and Gravy

This hearty specialty is sure to put a smile on any Hoosier’s face. Whether you like this classic dish with a side of sausage or bacon, you won’t find many Hoosiers who will ever turn down this beloved breakfast food. No wonder it’s a staple at so many small diners and cozy restaurants here.

10. Persimmon Pudding

It may look like a simple slice of pie, but really, it’s so much more. This Indiana specialty is hard to find beyond our borders. This unique dish is made with persimmon pulp and is a must-have at any Hoosier dinner party or holiday get-together.
