AFib heart arrhythmia is most common in Indiana, Franciscan Health cardiologist raising awareness

LAFAYETTE, Ind.(WLFI) – Over 10 million people in the United States are affected by the heart arrhythmia atrial fibrillation, more commonly known as AFib.

Franciscan Health Lafayette Cardiologist Dr. Mohammed Al-Yafi says AFib is a complex disease.

He simplifies the workings of the heart into three parts: the sinus node, the conduction system, and the myocardium. The sinus node is known as the natural pace maker of the heart. The conduction system transmits the electrical impulses from the top chamber to the bottom chamber. The myocardium is the heart muscle.

Dr. Al-Yafi said, “So all of these, they work together and they are synchronized together. They have a harmony and that makes the heart beat normally.”…
