‘Proud to call myself a survivor’ | Elizabeth Smart shares her path to healing, empowerment 21 years after abduction

INDIANAPOLIS — The Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case captivated the nation in 2002 when the 14-year-old was abducted from her Utah home.

“I was kidnapped out of my bed at knifepoint,” Smart said. “I was taken up into the mountains behind my home. I was chained up. I was held captive. I was raped. I was abused. Initially I was kept about 3.5 miles from my home, but then as summer turned into fall, my captors took me to southern California for the winter because we wouldn’t have survived a winter in Salt Lake.”
