Assault victim says random argument led to self-defense shooting in downtown Indy street: docs

INDIANAPOLIS — The victim of an attack over the weekend in downtown Indianapolis told police two men tried to beat him in the street before he shot one in the stomach in self-defense. While one suspect has since been arrested, the other is recovering in the hospital.

Indianapolis Metropolitan police officers were called just before 2 a.m. Saturday to the intersection of East Washington and North Pennsylvania Street on report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found one man pinning another to the ground and throwing punches.

Police say that man, identified as Lamonte Thomas, is now in Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of robbery, criminal confinement and strangulation. No bond information is available as of 12 p.m. Monday.

Court documents filed in the case against the 29-year-old Thomas detail how an alleged random argument and subsequent fight in the street led to a self-defense shooting that injured his uncle, who is now in the hospital in critical condition.
