Man accused of stealing over $20,000 through “ghost employment” scam

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — A Evansville man is charged with fraud, and accused of stealing over $20,000 through a scam officers call “ghost employment.”

An affidavit says back in October of 2025, a woman was kicked off her government benefits, after authorities noticed her records showed she was paid over $20,000 by Helping Hands Senior Living in Indianapolis. The woman told authorities she never received any of the money records showed she was paid.

Detectives with the Evansville Police Department say pay stubs went back as far as March of 2025, showing the woman’s employment. The woman told police she was approached by an acquaintance of hers, Kareem Strother, about being his in home health care provider. This is when police say Strother stole the woman’s personal information, including her social security number and a copy of her ID…
