Nearly 2,000 immigrants lose commercial driver’s licenses as Indiana eliminates nearly all non-domiciled CDLs

JAY COUNTY, Ind. — Thousands of commercial drivers who are immigrants lost their Indiana-issued licenses after a new state law went into effect April 1. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles says it revoked “nearly all” non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses.

Gov. Mike Braun signed the law in mid-March, just three weeks before it took effect. Typically, laws signed in spring take effect July 1. Supporters say the new law promotes safety following several deadly crashes involving immigrant drivers.

“We want to make sure that the drivers that are out there behind the wheel are the best and properly trained that we can get,” said State Rep. Jim Pressel, (R-District 20), the author of the law. “And this is a first step in setting the standard even for drivers coming through, along with the drivers that we are licensing here in Indiana.”…
