July 1 camping ban in US state ‘creates crisis’ as rule breakers face $500 fines or 60 days in jail

A TOUGH new law has sparked fears of chaos as Americans could face fines of up to $500 or even jail time from July 1.

City leaders say the crackdown has created a “crisis” as local services struggle to cope with rising homelessness and a lack of affordable housing.

From July 1, anyone found camping on public land, in the state of Indiana, will have just 48 hours to move on after a police warning, or risk being charged with a misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days behind bars.

Mayor Kerry Thomson blasted the law and warned it could force desperate people deeper into poverty instead of helping them get off the streets…
