‘Mya’ Makes $1.7M Discovery After Sniffing Car Pulled Over in California

The border patrol dog smelled the fentanyl in the trunk

A Border Patrol canine named Mya is being credited with finding a $1.7 million haul of fentanyl being smuggled in California.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents seized more than 38 pounds of fentanyl after a driver was pulled over on Interstate 5.

Agents assigned to the San Clemente Border Patrol Station stopped a car last Thursday that was heading north near the Vista Hermosa Highway exit. Mya alerted agents about possible narcotics near the trunk.

The spare tire in the trunk contained 15 packages of blue pills that turned out to contain fentanyl, the agency said in a news release .

The driver and narcotics were turned over to the Dru g Enforcement Administration , and the vehicle also was seized

According to the DEA’s Facts About Fentanyl , one kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill half a million people.

“Even in small amounts, this deadly drug can cause havoc on the people who fall victim,” said Chief Patrol Agent Patricia D. McGurk-Daniel.
