Driver killed in fiery Irvine crash

An SUV driver was found dead inside a vehicle that burst into flames after crashing into a concrete support column under the 73 Toll Road in Irvine, authorities said Friday.

The crash occurred about 10:20 p.m. Thursday on Bonita Canyon Drive under the 73 Toll Road, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Arriving Irvine police officers and Newport Beach and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters found a 2008 Volvo SUV in flames, police said.

After putting out the flames, firefighters found the driver dead inside the SUV, police said. The driver’s name, age and gender were not released.

It appeared the Volvo was southbound on Bonita Canyon Drive and lost control, striking the concrete column, police said. The reason for the loss of control was not known.

An investigation was underway by the Irvine Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team.
