Sales Tax Hike Hits Shoppers in Southern California as New Rates Take Effect Tuesday

Shoppers in Southern California should prepare for an uptick in sales tax rates starting Tuesday, as increases approved by voters last November come into effect. As detailed by FOX LA, numerous cities, including Alhambra, Arcadia, and Artesia, will see their rates jump, many going from 10.25% to 10.5%. The increase is largely a result of Measure A, the Los Angeles County Homelessness Services and Affordable Housing Ordinance. This measure bumps the county sales tax from 9.5% to 9.75% to support funding for homelessness issues.

The new sales tax in Los Angeles County affects a range of purchases, from daily essentials like groceries to significant acquisitions like vehicles and electronics. According to an article by NBC Los Angeles, Palmdale and Lancaster are set to witness their rates escalate to 11.25%, marking the highest in the county. Meanwhile, places like Long Beach will adjust to a 10.50% sales tax. This decision by voters in November aims to keep more dollars local, aimed at improving public programs and infrastructure. The city of Lancaster has announced an economic incentive program, “Shop, drive, earn,” to lessen the impact on residents and businesses, especially for larger purchases.

Not everyone is on board with the increases, however. Palmdale City Councilmember Andrea Alarcón voiced her opposition, concerned about the ramifications for local commerce and households. “This will disincentive local buying, hurt local and small businesses, and deter tourism. The people of Palmdale cannot afford an additional tax on day-to-day expenses. Seniors and those on fixed incomes cannot afford it.
