Lawsuits and Misconduct Prompt Sheriff’s Department Oversight

A Riverside County supervisor is expected to introduce a motion to establish an oversight committee for the Sheriff’s Department, as civil lawsuits and allegations of misconduct continue to mount. While the timing and specific details of the proposal remain unclear, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Accountability Coalition released a statement this week calling on District Attorney Mike Hestrin to investigate claims raised in a recent whistleblower lawsuit. The coalition also announced it expects First District Supervisor Jose Medina to bring the motion forward during the Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for July 29. Currently, more than a dozen civil lawsuits have been filed by families who allege that misconduct within the county jail contributed to the deaths of their loved ones.
