Southern California is under a tsunami advisory, with some parts of Northern California and the West Coast under a more serious tsunami warning, after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck eastern Russia on Tuesday. That magnitude, upgraded twice already, makes the quake one of the largest in the last century.
The tsunami alert for Southern California was upped to an advisory — the second-highest level of alert — around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (it was previously a tsunami watch, the lowest level). Forecasts say Southern California could experience a tsunami starting around 1 a.m., when the coast here will be approaching high tide.
As of about 10:20 p.m., the coast from Cape Mendocino to the California-Oregon border was under a tsunami warning, the highest level of alert.
