Joel Klatt Makes His Opinion Clear on Alabama, SMU Debate

The College Football Playoff is not scheduled to begin until the third week of Dec. With the Conference Championship Games coming up, the final standings for the postseason will be revealed in due time.

Until then, many have already debated which teams deserve a spot in the playoffs or not. Two teams who have garnered a ton of attention are the Alabama Crimson Tide and SMU Mustangs.

Alabama owns a 9-3 record this season and is not participating in the SEC Championship Game. Meanwhile, SMU is 11-1 on the year and will be taking on the Clemson Tigers in the ACC championship.

Many believe that if SMU loses to Clemson on Saturday, Dec. 7, then they should remain ahead of the Crimson Tide in the College Football Standings. However, Joel Klatt of Fox Sports argues that the Mustangs’ inability to defeat a ranked team, if they just so happen to lose to the Tigers in their upcoming matchup, then Alabama deserves a higher seed than SMU.

SMU’s impressive season doesn’t look all that great considering the program’s strength of schedule was 75th in the nation. The Mustangs only loss on the season came in Week 2 in a 18-15 heartbreaker. The Cougars are now the No. 18 team in the country with the Mustangs being No. 8.
