Scammers arrested after targeting elderly Hopkins County man into paying for insurance

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — Two Texas men were arrested on Thursday after an elderly man in Hopkins County was allegedly scammed and had a large amount of money stolen from him.

According to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, deputies responded to a call where an elderly man was convinced by two suspects that his accounts had been hacked and that he needed to provide funds to a courier for FTD insurance.

Following an investigation, the suspects were identified as Chih Hao Chang and Fujie Shi, both from Plano. On Thursday, investigators searched their home in Plano and found multiple items tying them to the exploitation of the victim and suspected ketamine.

Chang and Shi were both arrested for exploitation of the elderly and disabled, and both remain in the Collin County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

“This case is a stark reminder of the sophisticated tactics criminals use to prey on vulnerable members of our community,” Hopkins County Sheriff Lewis Tatum said. “We urge everyone to be extremely cautious. If you are ever contacted by someone asking for money for any reason you are not 100% sure of, please contact your local law enforcement agency or your financial institution immediately.
