Madison fire officials warn of house fires linked to power strips

MADISON, Miss. (WLBT) – Fire officials are urging residents to take safety precautions to prevent house fires linked to power strips, following two fires in the city this summer.

The Madison Fire Department said plugging high-wattage equipment into power strips can lead to fire outbreaks.

What to plug in — and what not to

Community educator and paramedic Lisa Valadie said heavy appliances require a direct wall connection.

“If it’s a heavy appliance, even if it’s a small refrigerator, it needs to be plugged directly into the wall,” Valadie said. “And when you use these, they need to be a low-volt appliance like a battery charger, phone charger, that type of thing.”…
