Central Mississippi could still see hurricane effects, officials warn power outages and wind pose risks

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. — Utility and emergency officials are urging residents across Central Mississippi to prepare this weekend as effects from a hurricane are expected to reach the area.

The National Weather Service has placed Rankin County under a level two wind threat.

Drought conditions raise outage risk

Entergy says the Capital region has seen little rain recently, leaving tree vegetation weaker and more likely to break under wind. Officials say this increases the risk of branches falling onto electrical lines.

“As a result of the drought, we do see additional vegetation challenges with the dead trees causing an impact to the electrical system,” Entergy Director of Operations Excellence Josh Vance said. “So, with that we are prepared with increased patrols ahead of the storm. Mitigation ahead of the storm.”…
