JPD: Threats of violence force Blackburn Middle School to go under police surveillance

Blackburn Middle School will be under police surveillance Wednesday until the end of the week, following social media posts threatening violence at the school. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade made the announcement in a Wednesday press conference.

The chief added that JPD will maintain a presence at the scene until the situation has been mitigated or the identity of the person making the “egregious threats” is known.

“We have a strong presence around Blackburn Middle School (Wednesday) morning,” Wade said. “If you go there, you will see JPD is there to secure the location because we understand that JPS law enforcement is primary, but these kids are our kids. And we’re going to be there and make sure they are well protected.”

Tuesday evening, a message thread circulated on social media describing violence that would result in the loss of life for those attending the middle school. As the post gained more attention, parents and guardians expressed their concerns with some posting that they were not bringing their child to school.
