Jackson’s emergency contract with Richard’s Disposal to end soon

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Time is running out for Jackson leaders to choose a vendor for garbage collection. The emergency contract with Richard’s Disposal will end on March 31, 2024.

Members of the Jackson City Council said they’re looking for a solid vendor at a good price that provides services for the citizens of the capital city.

Councilman Ashby Foote, Ward 1, said the sooner they are presented a vendor the better. He said it’s important to nail down a request for proposal (RFP) .

“We have a big potential fine from MDEQ of around $900,000. And it’s important that we get through that and come up with a resolution of that situation, as well. That goes back. We’re being fined because we because of the garbage crisis that happened a year ago with no garbage service for 17 days,” Foote explained.

He said time is of the essence.

Richard’s Disposal files complaint over Jackson’s new RFP

“I’m very confident that it can get done, but it really depends on the mayor bringing it forward. If he waits until the last minute, then odds of it being successful are less. So, it’s important that he’s had… they’ve had 30 days. The administration’s had 30 days to review the two bids that were put in. And there’s no reason they can’t bring them to us on a timely basis,” Foote said.
