Jackson MS ranks in Top 25 among America’s loneliest cities. See numbers here

Jackson ranked among the Top 25 loneliest cities in the nation, according to Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Loneliest Cities in America” study.

The organization said it analyzed housing data for more than 170 cities with a population of at least 150,000 from the Census Bureau to find America’s “loneliest” cities. To determine loneliness, the study looked at the number of one-person households in each city.

According to the report, Jackson ranked 21st with 40.4% of 62,149 households being occupied by one person.

Washington, D.C., ranked first with 48.6% of the city’s households being occupied by one individual. Moreno Valley, Calif., ranked last in the nation at 9.5%.

Based on data examined in report, the trend of “living alone continues to rise.”

Nationwide, 37 million Americans live alone, representing a little over a quarter of households. The report also found that the number of people living alone has increased by nearly 5 million within the last decade.

“Living alone is more common than ever in the United States,” the report said.
