A Jackson police officer sustained severe injuries after being hit by a suspect’s vehicle Friday morning.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade identified the officer as Corporal Anthony Johnson. Johnson is one of the department’s lead officers with the Crisis Intervention team, a unit that works closely with Hinds Behavioral Health dealing with individuals who suffer from mental illness.
According to a Friday press release, the officer responded to a call from Merit Health around 8:30 a.m. regarding a subject parked in the emergency room area refusing to leave.
As Johnson approached the vehicle, the subject drove off and struck the officer.
“The car was moving at a very high speed. And when the officer was struck, he flew into the air and came down on the subject’s windshield,” Wade said.
The subject, later identified by Wade as 32-year-old Nicholas Glover, then fled the scene.
The news release states the vehicle was later stopped at Lynch Street near Westover. It was there where Glover was apprehended and arrested by police.
