High school students compete in Mississippi National Guard culinary competition

CLINTON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – It’s a race against the clock.

Clinton High School had the chance to host the Mississippi National Guard State Culinary competition.

Students from at least nine high schools statewide are tasked with taking MRE’s and creating a winning dish in under an hour.

They work in teams, and can bring 10 extra items to spruce up their dish to present to the judges.

The unique experience showcases the importance of culinary arts chefs with the Mississippi Army National Guard who do a big job providing the fuel for service members.

Staff Sgt. Shelbi Constancio is with the Mississippi Army National Guard.

“The fact that Mississippi gets to set the tone, it makes it even better,” said Constancio.

Students cook the meals inside of a containerized kitchen, which can serve up to 800 soldiers a day in the field.

Eliana Vaughn is a Culinary Senior Intern and says, she never thought she would be doing this.
