Jackson councilman wants more officers hired for JPD

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, said a lot needs to be in place to help stop crime in the capital city. One of those measures would be a contract for the police chief.

The councilman said the contract for Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade was passed by the City Council, but Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba disapproved.

“The mayor vetoed that item. The City Council overrode his veto , which means that the chief of police will and shall have a contract,” Stokes said.

He also said more officers should be hired for the Jackson Police Department (JPD).

“What the mayor should be doing is let’s find a way to increase the number of police officers in the city, and let’s pay for them. We should have a goal to find enough money to hire 200 more police officers in the city,” stated Stokes.

He said an ordinance that required security personnel at businesses during hours of operation will be on the agenda at the next City Council meeting.
