Edwards church honors graduate with scholarship

EDWARDS, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Edwards honored a special graduate on Sunday with an Educational Scholarship Baccalaureate Service.

Elaine Willis, the daughter of the late Arthur N. Willis, said her father was an educator and their family wanted his name to live on, so they created a scholarship.

“About five years ago, my sister and I decided that we should do something to keep his legacy. Going past the number of years ago, but he had touched the lives of so many and a positive way. And so, we wanted to keep that going. And so, we engaged with the pastor here at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church about the idea, and they fully embraced it,” Willis said.

The church honored Kendriuana Armstrong on June 30. She graduated from Raymond High School and plans to attend Jackson State University (JSU) in the fall.

Church members said Armstrong recently placed second in her summer STEM program.

“As she moves into this next chapter, and also the graduates, to ensure that they bring kindness along with them, kindness will take them very far,” said Willis.
