Mississippians encouraged to practice firework safety during July 4th holiday

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Fireworks are set to fill the night sky across the national as the Fourth of July holiday approaches, but it’s important to know how to safely handle fireworks.

Dr. Derek Culnan, a burn specialist with Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jackson, said he sees patients with serious burns around this time each year. He said it’s important to take precautions.

“Have one person who’s the designated shooter, make sure they’re sober. Have somebody who’s in charge of safety and making sure that you got a bucket of water or a hose to put on any fires you create, particularly if it’s not raining out. And have somebody for wrangling the kids and making sure that they’re staying clear of anything that we’re blowing up,” said Culnan.

He said sparklers can burn children quickly.
