Rankin County Schools approves hiring of teacher assistant apprentices

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Rankin County Schools’ student teacher assistant apprenticeship program is a way for high school seniors to jumpstart their careers in teaching.

Students participating in the program assist teachers at the district’s elementary schools.

Katie Belford is a teacher in training at Brandon Elementary School and said she knew the program was a right fit for her from the start.

“It’s better than what I imagined it to be. Honestly, I imagined just observing. Now that I’m in there, I get to teach lesson plans and work with the kids one on one,” said Belford, a senior at Brandon High School.
