Frigid air combined with a low-pressure system over the Gulf is behind the latest Arctic blast could could bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain near the Interstate 10 corridor from Houston to Mobile, Alabama. There’s also the possibility of heavy snow just south of the Interstate 20 corridor across northern Louisiana and into Mississippi. Tuscaloosa got a light dusting of snow on Sunday, but nothing that would stick on the ground. Schools in Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, and Escambia are closing for several days after today’s MLK Day holiday. Parents should check with their child’s school for updated information.
The lows across Alabama aren’t expected to rise above freezing until mid week at the earliest. That has warming stations opening Birmingham and Montgomery, and health officials in Mobile warning residents to take precautions against frostbite. Jennifer Saari is a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Huntsville. APR news spoke to her just for the cold hit. She says whether snow hits or not, Alabamians need to protect themselves.
“Everyone needs to remember their cold safety measures. Keep those jackets and gloves nearby. Make sure you have a safety kit in the vehicle as well,” she said. “Make sure you take care of those pets, those elderly, those kids. Just make sure that everyone is safe for the cold weather, regardless of what happens.””…
