Man sentenced for killing one, injuring two in Jackson shooting

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A man pled guilty to the charges of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault in connection to a fatal shooting in Jackson.

Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens said Xavier Gray was sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter and 10 years for aggravated assault, with both sentences to run consecutively.

Two men plead guilty in Rankin County drive-by shooting case

The shooting occurred in the 300 block of West Capitol Street on April 22, 2022. When Jackson police arrived at the location, they found a body lying on the street corner in front of a bus station. The victim was identified as Clinton Newsome, 53.

Detectives discovered that Gray and three other men, who were homeless, became involved in a fight following a dispute at Farish Street Park. According to Owens, Gray fired multiple shots at Newsome with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing him at the scene.
