Jackson Fire Department hosts 2025 Citizens Fire Academy

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Jackson Fire Department (JFD) hosted the 2025 Citizens Fire Academy at the JFD Training Academy.

“We are a community-oriented fire department, and we just believe that our community needs to be well informed here in the City of Jackson. Unfortunately, we do have a lot of fires at times, and a lot of those fires can be attributed to unattended cooking. And so, you know, the message is to be able to express to our community members starts with us. And through that, that’s why we one of the reasons why we started the Citizens Fire Academy,” said Deputy Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders.

Jackson City Council concerned about city’s finances

The weeklong academy began with an introduction of the JFD command staff and a discussion about their duties. This week, attendees will experience hands-on fire safety education, including emergency preparedness and basic first aid. The group will tour fire stations and become familiar with equipment, vehicles and more.

A graduation ceremony for the academy will be held at 6:00 p.m. on July 21.
