Doctors urge heat safety for kids as school year approaches

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – As summer temperatures rise and the start of the school year approaches, medical professionals are urging families and teachers to take steps to keep children safe from heat-related illnesses.

Pediatricians said children are particularly vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially during outdoor school activities like recess and sports. Recognizing the early symptoms is key to preventing serious health complications.

“If you have kids who are showing these symptoms, they need to be removed from the physical activity and out of the heat and rapidly cool down,” said Dr. Tamina McMillan, a pediatrician. “It can progress to something more serious, which is heatstroke, and that’s considered a medical emergency. So, we’re trying to prevent that.”…
