National Weather Service: Dangerous heat expected in Mississippi this week

The National Weather Service has issued warnings in Mississippi for dangerous heat values across the state as warm temperatures and moist air will make temperatures feel like 105 to 110 degrees and higher in parts of the state this week.

“Basically, we’re approaching the second half of July into August,” said Mike Edmonston, senior weather forecaster at the National Weather Service in Jackson. “We’re not looking at record temperatures, but we’re looking at above normal temperatures, mid to upper 90s.”

While those temperatures are hot enough by themselves, Edmonston said moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will push heat indices to 105 to 110 throughout much of the NWS Jackson coverage area, which is most of the state except the coastal counties and North Mississippi. In Northwest Mississippi and along the Mississippi River, heat indices are expected to reach 110 to 115 degrees early and mid-week.
