Jackson leader, business owner offer free school haircuts

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – As summer winds down, one Jackson leader teamed up with a local business owner to help students start the school year with a new look.

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, partnered with Clinton business owner Jeffery Ross, with J Roz Cutz and Salon, to offer free back to school haircuts for boys and hairstyles for girls. For families, the event is a small, but powerful financial break. This act of service isn’t new, it’s a tradition.

“One day, I decided to call him up, and I said, ‘We need to do something for the community, and do something for the kids that are going to school. We need to make them look good and feel good.’ So, we decided that we would give back to the community and started doing the haircuts, and we’ve been doing it for 33 years now,” Ross said.

For Stokes, he said giving the students the tools they need to succeed can be as simple as showing them that they matter…
