Hinds County Detention Center struggles with overcrowding

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors said the Hinds County Detention Center was not meant to operate as such a large capacity.

During their board meeting on August 4, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said inmate numbers are more than 800. Supervisor Robert Graham, District 1, said they’re currently charging to house outside the county.

“We’re simply being overwhelmed because of, and I don’t mean this in a very bad way, because of the advent of the Capitol police. The Capitol police is doing a hell of a job, but it’s like putting a police department within a police department. They’re arresting over 100 people. And so with them putting people in our jail and continually putting people in our jail, and Jackson police continue putting people in our jail, it’s sooner or later we’re going to get to a point to where we no longer… we’re going to be at maximum capacity,” Graham said.

The new jail facility is expected to be complete by 2027.
