Police, community unite to revitalize Jackson neighborhoods

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson community leaders and police teamed up to clean up neighborhoods, starting with a pilot program that targets city ordinance violations.

The program began three months ago in six neighborhoods, including Will-O-Wood, Brookhollow, Oak Creek, Cedar Hills, Carriage Hills and Western Hills. It’s a response to years of neglect with overgrown lawns, dilapidated homes and inoperable vehicles.

“We started this program about three months ago with approval with Chief Wade. And since we were so short, a police officer in Code Enforcement and Zoning, we decided to put a program just in certain neighborhoods,” explained Ernest Ward, president of the Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods.

The Neighborhood Enhancement Team is working with Code Enforcement, Zoning and Solid Waste to address violations. City officials said the program will expand to more neighborhoods in the coming months.
