Mayflower Cafe marks 90 years of serving Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A local restaurant is celebrating 90 years since it first opened its doors to Jackson patrons.

The Mayflower Cafe opened its doors in 1935. Founded by Greek immigrants from the island of Patmos, the restaurant has become a longstanding staple of Jackson cuisine.

This anniversary comes just one year after the restaurant reopened under new ownership. The new owners, Hunter Evans and Cody McCain, also run the Belhaven-based restaurant Elvie’s. They emphasized after they reopened with renovations last year that they planned to stick to the culture that helped this restaurant thrive for generations before them.

“I think one of the things we wanted to convey was that we know that his [previous owner Jerry Kountouris’s] family started this, and that there’s a legacy of his family and this restaurant in Jackson, and we want to do nothing but carry that on,” said Evans in a 2024 interview with WJTV 12 News…
